Lost the root (or Administrator) password of your VPS? You can get back in without a ticket.
Option 1: Reset the password in the control panel
- Log in to the control panel and open your server.
- Use the reset password option. A new password is generated for you.
- Log in with SSH or Remote Desktop using the new password, and change it if you like.
This works for standard images with the guest agent installed. If it doesn't work on your system, use rescue mode.
Option 2: Rescue mode (Linux)
- In the control panel, enable rescue mode for your server. The rescue login details are sent by email.
- Log in to the rescue system with SSH and mount your disk:
lsblk mount /dev/vda1 /mnt - Change into your system and set a new password:
chroot /mnt passwd root exit - Unmount (
umount /mnt), disable rescue mode in the control panel and start the server normally.
Locked out because of SSH settings? The VNC console in the control panel lets you log in directly, as if you had a screen attached.
