There are two ways to restart a VPS, and they are not the same:
- A reboot inside the operating system (
rebooton Linux, Restart in Windows) restarts the OS, but the virtual machine itself keeps running with its old settings. - A restart from the control panel fully stops the virtual machine and starts it again, so it picks up any new settings.
When you need a control panel restart
- After a plan upgrade or any change to CPU, RAM or disk size.
- After an IP address change or a new IP was added.
- When our support team asks you to restart after a fix on our side.
- When your server is unreachable and a normal reboot doesn't help.
How to do it
- Log in to the control panel and open your server.
- Use the restart (or shutdown, then boot) power action.
- Wait a minute and connect again with SSH or Remote Desktop.
If your OS uses a static network configuration and your IP changed, update the configuration with the new IP and gateway shown in the control panel first – the IPv6 guide shows an example.
