Sending email from your VPS

Why mail ports are blocked by default, how to get them opened, and how to make sure your mail is delivered.

To protect our IP addresses from spam, the outgoing mail ports 25, 465 and 587 are blocked on new servers. Receiving mail and connecting to other services is not affected.

Getting the mail ports opened

  1. Open a ticket from your client area.
  2. Tell us what you will send: for example "transactional email for my shop" or "my own mail server for my company".
  3. We unblock the ports for your server and confirm in the ticket.

Spam, bulk mailing to purchased lists and phishing are not allowed. If we receive abuse reports, the ports are blocked again or the server is suspended.

Make sure your mail is delivered

  • Reverse DNS: set a PTR record that matches your mail hostname (how).
  • SPF: publish a TXT record such as v=spf1 ip4:203.0.113.10 -all for your domain.
  • DKIM: sign your outgoing mail and publish the public key in DNS.
  • DMARC: add a TXT record at _dmarc.example.com, for example v=DMARC1; p=quarantine.
  • Warm up slowly: start with low volumes so receiving providers learn to trust your IP.

Only need to send a few notifications? A transactional mail service (SMTP relay) is often the easier choice.
